Federer hits blip, then Quarters
Roger Federer, the former world number 1 and current world number 2, is through to the quarter-finals with a patchy win over Tommy Robredo.

Federer received another scare, not too long after his close-shave five setter with Gilles Simon, as he showed Robredo some very patchy form in the second set. The Swiss Maestro wrapped up the first set 6-3 with relative ease, but then allowed a lot of unforced errors to creep into his game, dropping the second set 3-6 as returns flew off his racquet.
Federer began to rely on his backhand and deft touch at net as his main weapons, and tried to erase the errors that had found place in his game. He took the third set 6-3.
The fourth set was a welcome return to form for the 16 time Grand Slam champion, as he began to re-find his consistency on shots, even inventing some new ones, such as the overhead defensive smash from his knees -

No sign of the hot dog now… But I guess he’s perfected that. Maybe this is his new party trick?
Anyway, the match eventually ended 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 and Federer lives to fight another day.
On another note, this means Federer’s in his 27th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, equalling Jimmy Connors’ record; so fair play to him! Next up - Almagro…
