Australian Open 2011, the top seeds
Yesterday the World number 1, Rafael Nadal, moved closer to reclaiming his 2009 Australian Open title, with a good win over Marin Cilic in the 4th round.

It was a clinical display as Nadal beat the Croat 6-2 6-4 6-3. He was wearing a flippin’ huge t-shirt though, I suppose that’s their solution to the sweat problem? Though to my knowledge he still changed shirt about 3-4 times…

He’ll now face Ferrer in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Murray was also out that day, and he showed the number 11 seed, Jurgen Melzer, how Grand Slam tennis is supposed to be played! I’ve never seen Murray play with such power and Nadal-like spin/direction on the forehand, and I was impressed.
Needless to say, this annoyed Melzer somewhat…

The scot took it in straight sets, 6-3 6-1 6-1, and remains untested in this Australian Open. He’ll face surprise opponent Alexander Dolgopolov, the unseeded man who beat 4th seed Robin Soderling, in the quarter-finals. Potentially a Murray-Nadal semi (feel free to salivate)!

Reigning Australian Open champion, Roger Federer, was on court last night and put on a sublime display of clinical precision and graceful elegance on court, as he dismissed the man who made Roddick look like an amateur - “The other Swiss”, Stan Wawrinka.

Federer romped to victory with a 6-1 6-3 6-3 win over his compatriot. Though Federer, in an interview post-match, said “The scoreline suggests maybe it was easier than it looked like. I thought it was a pretty tough match.” Fed, gracious as ever.

The G.O.A.T will face either Berdych (the man who, last year, put him out of the Wimbledon quarter) or, more likely, Djokovic (who put him out of the US Open semis, and is currently beating Berdych). It’ll be a stern semi for the legend.
